Close To My Heart Blog Hop

I haven't participated in a blog hop in a few months. This is the first time I am participating in this group's monthly hop and I am glad to "hop" in! We had a choice of sharing artwork featuring the Stamp of the Month, a Valentine or a Wintery Card. I chose to a Valentine. If you got here from Diana's Blog, you are on the right track. So, without further ado, here are my projects.

I wanted to show off the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge in my Valentine so I made a card with a matching treat box.

I used several goodies to complete the project. First, I cut a card base using the AP cartridge set on 5 1/2 inches. This is the base that cuts the heart out of the center. Both the card and treat box are done in Cotton Candy. Next, I cut one of the lacy background images in White Daisy and positioned it so that looked attractive through the heart "hole." After that was attached, I cut a piece of Hollyhock to measure 5 1/4 inches and attached that to give depth to the heart. I stamped the flourishes in Hollyhock ink (from "Love Life" stamp set.) The green flourish was cut using Topiary, the tag is cut in White Daisy as were the flowers. I inked the flowers in Hollyhock before I rolled them. By the way, the leaves were also cut and inked with Topiary and "Love" is from one of the stamp sets that is included with the AP cartridge. I'll talk a little about the treat box later...

Here is the inside of the card...I cut the lacy heart using the cartridge in White Daisy. I repeated the Hollyhock and White Daisy matting on the other side. The small flourishes are from "Love Life, too.

This is just a close up of the front. I was pleased how the Hollyhock complements the Cotton Candy. By the way, that is Hollyhock twill that is unfortunately no longer available.

Now for the treat box. I cut the box form on 10 inches. I love love love how the cartridge has the 3D items that are so easy to work with. Using the decorative layer feature, I was able to cut the heart silhouettes and then cut the matching mat using shift and the same "button." I did increase the size by 1/4 inch. The flower is cut in Cranberry for an accent and the flourish is from the "Love Life."

Retiring Close To My Heart Products

Everyone always anticipates the coming of a new CTMH Idea Book. The Spring/Summer 2012 Idea Book becomes available of February 1st! How exciting. But, to make room for all the new goodies, some items will no longer be available after January 31st. Two of the notable items that are retiring are among of my all time favorites...colored Waxy Flax and the 9x9 inch accordion albums. Waxy Flax will still be available in neutrals (Black, Chocolate, Bamboo and Colonial White) but those fun colors of Cranberry, Juniper, Crystal Blue and Sorbet will be gone. I love Waxy Flax. It is a wax covered embroidery floss that hold its shape and is great for threading buttons (remember no naked buttons), stitching and adding to tags. The 9x9 inch accordion albums are terrific for quick gifts. Unlike an 8x8 inch scrapbook, you can scrap 2 4x6 inch photos on a page. Several of the current paper packets are also being discontinued...Sonoma, Typeset, Roxie and Elemental will remain active.

In honor of the retiring products, I pulled out one of my favorite, long retired stamp sets called "A Friend is...." I don't even know when it was current. :o) I also wanted to show that you don't always need pattern paper to make an attractive project. This card is done on a 5 x 7 inch base of Dutch Blue. When was the last time I used Dutch Blue? I also used Sky and Cotton Candy. If you look closely, you can see the scored and sanded background on the Sky colored mat. It is scored on the 1/4 mark across the mat and then sanded. Sanding is a fun technique to do with the CTMH white core card stock. I colored the flowers with my Copics.

By the way, I used my Martha punches for the Cotton Candy mat and added just a touch of Liquid Pearls in the centers of the flowers. Using Card Sketches

Good Morning Everyone! I am really trying to stick to my plan of posting several times a week. Today, before I head out to work, I want to share a quick card that features a card sketch.

There are a great deal of "sketches" available for us to use. What is a sketch you ask? A sketch is a line drawing of a layout (either card or scrapbook layout) that we can use to help us design our projects easily and effortlessly. Close To My Heart has released several books that are probably the best I have found. Really! There are four scrapbooking publications (Reflections, Cherish, Imagine and Magic) and two card books called Originals and Wishes. I own all of them! What sets them apart from other collections are the simple fact that they are beautiful books. Each layout or card is featured using multiple varieties of artwork. The sketches also includes the exact measurements for each element of the project and there are technique tips throughout. I routinely reach for these books.

This is a card that I made following the sketch featured on page 78 of the Wishes book.

The card features stamped images from a set called Love Life. I stamped the flourish using Cotton Candy, randomly stamped the small hearts in tulip and then stamped, cut out and attached the larger hearts (Tulip.) "Love" (black) is from one of the stamp sets included with the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge. The papers include White Daisy, Black and patterned paper from a retired packet called Sweetheart. Sweetheart is currently available on my website under "while supplies last" at an incredible price.

Don't be afraid to use sketch books to help you create your projects. And, if you haven't checked out Wishes or Originals, make some time to do so. They are both reasonably priced (on my website.) I found that when I started using all of the sketch books the time I spent creating great projects was dramatically reduced. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Well, it's been a long time! "Busy" doesn't not even begin to describe how my life has been. I kept my classes going, made cards and lo and behold, became the floral designer at the Michaels near my home. Something had to be put on hold, so it was my blog. But, now things should begin to stabilize and I will be getting back to my blog. Now I just have to find time to take down my Christmas Decorations. hehehe...

More events that have occurred while I was away from my blog our the preparation is beginning for the new Spring Close To My Heart Idea Book. Some of our favor products will be going away come the end of January like colored Waxy Flax...I will get a list posted of some of our favorites. I have seen the new Idea Book and have placed my order. There are some really fun stamp sets coming soon!

I am also continuing with my Design Team work over at Crafting By Designs. It is a wonderfully friendly site dedicated to furthering our paper crafting skills and crafting new friendships. I was in charge of posting this week's Copic Challenge. I called it "Flower Power." The challenge is to make cards with flowers...let's hide those Holiday stamps for about a month :o). I have 2 cards made with the same stamp to show how the use of color effects the look of your project.

Christmas with the Cricut...Art Philosophy Style

I am really trying to share some of the work that I've been doing. One of the things that I have learned as I've been making cards for my Artfire Studio is the quick way I can make really cute cards using the Cricut. As I've posted about early, the CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge is probably one of the best cartridges I've seen. I was able to make this set of 4 cards in almost no time.

To make these fun cards, I cut the scalloped oval bases to measure 5 1/4 inches. Next, I cut the ovals and the matching red layer frame to measure 4 inches. The holly leaves were cut using the 1 3/4 inch measurement. How did I know to cut the holly leaves that size? The matching stamp set called "A Holiday" has the measurements printed right on the plastic stamp carrier. After all of my cutting was done, all I needed to do was a little stamping on the holly leaves and the sentiment (also in the A Holiday set ...A 1115) and I was ready to assemble the cards. I had 4 completed Christmas Cards in no time!

I am really loving the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge to help me complete great cards quickly. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Bundled Buddies...a fun Holiday Card

Whoo-Whoooo...hold on to your socks...a post 2 days in a row! Yes, I am making a good effort to keep things updated here. There are so many cute projects and Holiday products that I must keep this going...heeheehee.

A few months ago, I played along with 365 Card Challenges on a regular basis. Only because of my crazy schedule, I got away from their fun challenges. Today, I thought that I would devote a little time to playing along. Today's challenge is "The 3 F's." We were to come up with a card that contained fringe, fancy cuts and we were to come up with the third "F." Cute challenge....anyway, here is my card...

For the fancy cuts, I used my Martha Stewart punches. The stripe of Cranberry is the made to look like a scarf. I scored and sanded the strip and then fringed the edges. My third "F" is the friends sentiment. It could also be the fur of that cute little beaver, too. BTW, the sentiment and the beaver are from a Close To My Heart stamp set called Bundled Buddies. It is so cute, containing several images of little animals all dressed for winter. The image is colored with my Copics and I added Liquid Applique to his hat and some Crystal Snow on the ground and snowball.

A Rosette Christmas Tree

Hi everyone...still busy...so what else is new? I've been working on all kinds of fun projects for my workshops, Michaels Classes and my Artfire Studio. I thought that I would post one of the cute little projects I've recently completed.

This paper Christmas Tree stands about 6 to 7 inches tall. Just perfect as a small decoration on your buffet, fireplace or dining table. Here is how I made it...

1. You will need to cut 6 strips of paper. The width of the strips should be graduated. I used 2 x 12, 1 3/4 x 12, 1 1/2 x 12, 1 1/4 x 12, 1 x 12 and 3/4 x 12. (I used CTMH Olive and New England Ivy)

2. I punched on edge of each strip using a border punch (I used MS Deco punch)

3. Using my score board, scored each strip the 12 inch length on the 1/2 inch mark (24 total scores each strip)

4. Accordion folded the stripes, glued ends together, folded inward to create a rosette. (I used an 1 1/4 circle punch to help hold together and also used CTMH Liquid Glass as an adhesive.)

5. When all 6 strips are folded into rosettes, attached them together in ascending size. 6. Rim the flower pot in Liquid Glass and set the assembled rosettes on top.

7. Attach a star to the top.

8. Using a glue pen, "color" glue on the edges of the branches and sprinkle with Crystal Snow.

I image that you could use the same procedure and make the tree any size that you wish. Just remember, if you are making larger rosettes, you will need to increase the length beyond the 12 inches I used. Feel free to give this cute little tree a try. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Believe in St. Nick

I know, I know the best intentions to keep this blog updated fell short once again. I have been soooo busy, I don't even know where to begin. I'm teaching all kinds of classes at 3 different Michaels in the Philadelphia area, have 2 new members of the Papers Pads and Pictures CTMH Team, have a card workshop tomorrow...it goes on and on. No excuse, I need to make time for my blog.

Anyway, I always try to think ahead. I wanted to get a card done today to show off some of the fun cards we will be making at next month's workshop. I didn't want to post the cards that we are making tomorrow in case any of the attendees see this post. Gotta keep the surprise...heeheehee.

This card features an image from a terrific My Acrylix set called "St. Nick." The pattern paper is from "Believe" and the card stock colors include: Holiday Red, Sweet Leaf, Topiary and White Daisy. I just became a Fisk-a-teer a few days ago, so I had to dig out my Threading Water punch. St. Nick is colored with my Copics.

Close To My Heart Bundled Buddies

Well, I promised that I would do a better job at getting things posted here on my blog and here is my first effort. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to "play" a little. Shortly after the new Idea Book was released, I purchased this new, cute stamp set called "Bundled Buddies." You all know that I love to color with my Copics. This set is just perfect for coloring.

I wanted to make Clean and Simple cards to show off how cute the images were. If you remember, a CAS card is one that has a great deal of white space and the image is the focal point. On the top card, for fun, I heavily distressed, scored, sanded and fringed the edges of the red strip because I wanted to mimic the look of a scarf. The second card, I randomly stamped snowflakes that are included in the CTMH October Stamp of the Month called "Holiday Magic."

This set is great for those of us that love to color. Remember that you don't need to use Copics...you can use your markers and/or water color pencils, too. For Now, Happy Crafting!

CTMH October Blog Hop!

Wow, where did September go??? As I was preparing for this blog hop, I realized that I haven't posted since the last hop...ahhhh....I have been really busy working on samples, crops, workshops and teaching. I really must do a better job... forgive me? :o)

Just in time for those Holiday Cards, CTMH has created a great Stamp of the Month. It is called Holiday Magic and contains just about every stamp you could need for terrific Christmas Cards. What I really like is it has a "split" sentiment. That is, a set of sentiments that works together for stamping on both the front and inside of your card. If you've come here from Judy's blog, you are on the right track. So, without further ado, on to my project.

One of the hottest trends right now in paper crafting is the "Smash Book." What is a Smash Book you ask? It is a shabby chic book that is intended to be used! It contains pockets and placed to immediately attach your fun memorabilia. For this month's hop, I have created a Smash Book, CTMH style.

The book is made from white lunch bags! The bottoms of the bags form the flaps and the tops are left open to store tickets, cards, carry a pen and glue stick. The book is covered using Winter Wonderland along with Chocolate, Spring Iris, Crystal Blue, Twilight and White Daisy card stock. The same colors were used for inks and the Trees were stamped using Topiary. There are several fun techniques included in this book such as sanding, dry embossing, sponging, glittering, paper piecing, repeat stamping and using Liquid Glass to cover the tree on the front cover. And, of course, I used that wonderful Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge. Remember, a Smash Book is made so that you can glue cards and trinkets immediately into the book and then journal about them. That is why there are so many open areas in my book.

Close To My Heart September Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

Hello There! I missed last month's Blog Hop and it's nice to be back. This month, Close To My Heart has a very useful and versatile stamp of the month. It is called "Limited Edition" and it contains tags sentiments and images. If anyone is looking for a stamp to personalize their work, this is it. There are journaling lines and even a "save the date" image. If you've arrived from Susan's Blog, you are on the right hop along track.

As soon as I looked at this stamp set, I knew what I needed to complete. I created this scrapbook layout in reverent memory of one of America's most tragic moments.

I took this photograph in June 2001 from the deck of a cruise ship as we sailed from the Port of New York to Bermuda. To this day, I remain astounded by the image I preserved.

The layout is my take on a layout pictured on page 53 of the new Idea Book. The background is Sorbet card stock and the pattern paper is from Elemental. The starts were cut using the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge and stamped using the set called "Love Life." I've also used Cranberry, Pacifica and Colonial White card stock and the ink colors are the same with Desert Sand used for sponging and stamping the hand image. The stamped images from "Limited Edition" include the hand image and "remember."

The Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge Makes Creating So Easy!

I'm having so much fun with the Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge! Trendy and sophisticated scrapbook layouts are made easy by using this new tool!

This is my take on one of the layouts featured in the new Fall/Winter CTMH Idea Book. It features Roxie B/T Duos and one of the new embellishment packs...Bling Assortment. Roxie is a great combination of Smoothie, Desert Sand, Tulip and Black. The Bling Assortment is package of terrific crystal buttons and crystal and pearl stick pins. And those 3D Roses? Why cut with my Art Philosophy cartridge, of course!
Making the 3D Roses is easy with the cartridge. The first thing I tell everyone is NOT to lose the book that comes with every cartridge. That is your guide for ever available image on the cartridge. These roses are cut by setting the Cricut on the Font key. Hit shift and then tell the machine that you want to cut "banner 6." A spiral shape will be cut. If you wish, you can ink the edges (like I did in this case) and then just roll the spiral inward. I hold the rolled shape together with Liquid Glass and you have created a paper rose!

Using Color To Help Convey the Message in Your Projects

As promised, I want to get back to my thoughts on using color to enhance your projects. Previously we talked about using Reds, Blues and Yellows. These are the Primary Colors...the three basic colors from which all other colors are derived. Because of this, a project done using these colors will portray a sense of simplicity and purity. Think about a Disney Project. You automatically gravitate to Reds, Blues and Yellows. Bright and cheery, these colors convey "fun." Now, think of a Herritage project...bright reds, blues and yellows just do not come to mind. Softer combinations are what you traditionally think. In a Herritage Layout, you want to create a sense of respect and reverance. This is achieved by mixing the Primary Colors.

When you mix the Primary Colors, you create what is known as the Secondary Colors. Think of colors as the numbers on a clock.

I my sample of a "color wheel" blue is at 12:00, yellow is at 4:00 and red is at 8:00. In your mind, draw a triangle between blue, yellow and red. You have now connected your Primary Colors. Because the triangle you have drawn has equal sides, those shades of blue, yellow and red will always work together in your projects. Now, for the Secondary Colors. In between blue and yellow, you have green. That is because, when blue and yellow are mixed together you create green. The same applies for the orange between the red and yellow and the violet between the red and blue. Green, Orange and Violet are the Secondary Colors. In your mind, draw a similiar triangle between green, orange and violet. The sides of that triangle are equal like the sides of the Primary triangle. This is a guide for you to use. Green, orange and violet will always work together in a project because of the equal sides of the Secondary Triangle.

This is a fun note card I created to show how Secondary Colors coordinate on your projects. Don't you get a totally different feel from the card than a red, blue and yellow card? The Violet is a CTMH color called Gyspy, the Green is New England Ivy and the Orange is Sunset. The image is from a stamp set called "Thanksgiving" and is colored with my Copics.

Using colors wisely in your projects is an easy way to enhance the theme and mood of your projects. Feel free to experiement with color to create your own special mood. For Now, Happy Crafting!

So Busy With The Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge

WOW, it's been a long time since I had a chance to update my blog. But that doesn't mean that I haven't been busy. I had an Open House, a Card Workshop, taught 2 classes at Michaels and played with my new CTMH Cricut Cartridge. Have I mentioned that I think it is the best cartridge that I've ever worked with? :o)

Here are just a couple examples of the fun projects I've created...

I forgot to add that I also am continuing as a Design Team member of Crafting by Design. What a terrific new website for paper crafters. Here are two more cards that I made for the site...one is for the fun sketch challenge and the other is for the Copic Challenge.

CTMH Cricut Cartridge and Sonoma Papers

Can I tell you how excited I am about the new CTMH Cricut Cartridge called Art Philosophy? I know, I've mentioned it several times, but it is just so amazing. Couple it was the new paper packet called Sonoma and lookie what you can do!

Sonoma is perfect for heritage photos! I am very fortunate to have many pictures of my Grandmother. She was born in 1889 and passed away in 1976. The large photo, I estimate was taken around 1902. I have dates for the other two...1892 and 1907 (her high school Graduation portrait.) Just a note about scrapping with old photos...There has been a great deal of chatter about whether to use the original photos or copies. Many people assert that you should scrap the originals. If scrapbooking is about preservation of memories, use the originals. I tend to disagree. I scan my originals and print copies. Here is my thought process....I want the originals to be preserved, so after they are scanned, I store them in a photo safe box and then in a metal box. You never know if someone else in the family would want a copy of the treasure that you have. Having had my house hit by a micro burst and severely damaged a number of years ago, I know the importance of preserving special treasures. When you scrap the copy of an older photo, you don't have the fear of it being damaged or lost. You also are able to share your with so many more people without concern. There is no right or wrong answer, this is just my humble opinion.

Anyway, back the the details of the layout. I used the Art Philosophy cartridge for many of the details. All of the 3D flowers, and the butterflies were cut using it. The word "Nana" was cut using the font. Don't you love the pearl opaque details? :o) The cameo is from the new stamp set called "Sweet Memories" but I did use the cartridge to cut the scallop and oval with which it is stamped. "Remember" and "Sweet Moments" are also from the set. The flourish is an image contained in a new set called "Love Life."

I also love the new Heirloom Assortment. The hanging charm is included in that set along with 3D resin flowers. Another new embellishment in the Idea Book are Foundry Pins. See how I have the butterfly attached close to the cameo? Love it....by the way, I did the hand stitching using Olive embroidery floss.

Two things I need to mention, I've not forgotten the Papers Pads and Pictures Challenge....been so busy playing with the new cartridge that I haven't caught up. There will be a new challenge coming shortly...thanks for your patience. Also, I will return to my talk about color theory. CTMH Cricut Cartridge

Well, it is official. Today is the release date of the new Close To My Heart Idea Book. And, all I can say is wow! There are so many exciting things in the new book....8 new paper packets, reduced prices on stamp sets and most importantly, CTMH has partnered with Provo Craft and we now have a Cricut Cartridge! I posted a sample card yesterday but wait until you see what I've done today!

There have been a pile of questions about what size Cricut you need. While I agree, to maximize the new cartridge called "Art Philosophy" an Expression is best, look what I completed today with my "Baby Bug!"

This card features one of the new paper packets called "Sonoma." The card is a standard A2 size card in Bamboo. The pattern paper is from Sonoma. The focal sentiment image and frame have been cut with the new Cricut Cartride, the flourish has been cut with the Cartridge, the 3D flowers have been cut with the Cartridge along with the frame and oval that I stamped with the matching stamp set called "Sweet Moments." Wow....I love it!

This fun treat bag was cut using the Cricut. It is done in Holiday Red. The pattern paper (scallops cut on the Cricut) is from a new paper packets called "Believe." Take a close look....that is a ribbon slide, cut on the cricut along with the star attached to the new pin embellishment. One of the great things that sets this Cricut Cartridge apart from any other I have ever seen is the MATCHING stamp sets! Cut the image out and stamp it!

So "Let The Party" begin! This card base is cut using the card function on the cartridge. The mats (using a new pack called Roxie) were also cut using the cartridge. Check out that cut cupcake....yup, cut on the Cricut and stamped with one of the images included on one of the 3 "D" sized stamp sets included in the Cricut Bundle. I just LOVE the bundle...I know that I am yelling and excited, but I can't help myself. This is a terrific cartridge....I have had my Cricut since the beginning and this is the best cartridge I have ever seen!

Every project I have posted has been completed with a "Baby Cricut." Don't fret if you don't own one of the larger machines. While you won't be able to do everything, these are some of the few projects you can complete. Don't hesitate....Expressions or Personal Cricut, there are plenty of projects to complete! CTMH Art Philosophy Cricut Cartridge... In with the New and Out with the Old

Tomorrow is the day! The release of the new Close To My Heart Idea Book. There are so many new and fun things to share that I am going to deviate from my "Color Use" postings in order to share some of the new goodies. I'll return to that topic shortly.

One of the best things in the new Idea Book is the Cricut Cartridge. It is called Art Philosophy and it is probably one of the best cartridges I have ever used. Really! :o) It has 3D items, cards, a font with a shadow, shapes...the list goes on and on.

When you purchase the Cricut Bundle, you will receive the cartridge, 3 "D" size matching stamp sets and 3 sets of matching chipboard shapes. Wow... Everything on this card comes from the Cricut Bundle. I cut the card base in cocoa using one of the shape features. The oval, flourish and 3D flowers are also cut using the "bug." Last but not least, "Happy Birthday" is from one of the included stamp sets.

There have been a lot of questions concerning what size Cricut Machine you need to use the cartridge. Everything for this card has been cut on a "Baby Bug." The Baby Bug is the nickname for the original Cricut Machine that was released almost 6 years ago. You can cut images ranging between 1 inch and 5 1/2 inches (the sizing increases by 1/2 inch except for the the ability to cut 1 1/4 inch images.) There have been additions to the Cricut Family over the years. There is a Cricut Create ( not very familiar with that one), the Expression Machine and now the Imagine. The Expressions will cut images ranging from 1/4 inch to 23 1/2 inches and the Imagine cuts the same size but also includes a printer.

The stamp sets included with the Cricut Bundle include images that are used to stamp the images once they are cut. The measurements needed to match the stamp to the cut image are included on the plastic stamp carrier. Some of the images are sizes that aren't available on the "Baby Bug," but, I was able to create this lovely 5 inch card on the baby bug. Another thing to keep in mind is the 3D items. There are such as a Pillow Box and French Fry Box on the cartridge. You may not be able to cut the items as large as you would like with the smaller Cricut. While I believe you will have more options with the Expressions Machine, don't feel that you absolutely need the larger machine to take advantage of the shapes in Art Philosophy. The Baby Bug will still cut all the shapes!

Today is the last day to be able to purchase several of our favorite paper packets like Mistletoe, Olivia and Magnifique. Also, bulk packs of single color card stock is changing and more importantly the cost is increasing. If you are looking for bulk packs for Holiday Cards or invites, may I suggest that you order it today before the changes.

As with everything, change is enevitable. Tomorrow, is the big day for many new products at Close To My Heart...especially that terrific Cricut Cartridge. Big Bug, Little Bug, you are going to love Art Philosophy. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Well, the Close To My Heart Convention is now fading into memory (wish I had be able to attend this year.) I do have some fun things to share though. The new Idea Book will be officially released on August 1st. I have already seen it and I can't wait to share all the goodies. My shipment of new product is due on Friday, so I will have some great things prepared for Monday! :o) One thing I will peak your interest with is the new Cricut Cartridge! I can't wait to see it in person. It has 3D items, a font, 3D flowers and all kinds of shapes for our projects.

Another thing I will share is that 4 paper packs from the current Idea Book will be returning: Sophia, Mayberry, Fanfare and Lucky.

This card is made using Lucky. Lucky is a terrific paper packet and just perfect for masculine projects. The stamp set is used also remains current and is called "Enjoy the Ride." Some more fun facts about this card...I used Rock and Roll stamping in Outdoor Denim and Olive on the corner stamp. The bicycle is heat embossed in Outdoor Denim and Gold Embossing Powders. Olive and Outdoor Denim are 2 colors that work beautifully together because they are what are called analogous colors. These are colors that rest next to each other on the color wheel. I will talk more about the color wheel in a later post.

Right now, the most important thing to remember is that the Idea Book will be here shortly....Sit Back and Enjoy the Ride! For Now, Happy Crafting!

Making Primary Colors Work For Your Projects

Back when we were in school, we were taught about the "Primary Colors." Red, Blue and Yellow. These are the colors that are the base for all other colors. When we think about the primary colors, we automaticly think bright child like colors. These colors are easy to work with because we know the mood and message that we are sending...Disney Scrapbook Layouts, School Day Layouts, Children's Birthday Cards. But this doesn't have to be the case. There are tints and shades to every color. When we "tint" a color, the color is lighted by having white added. When we shade a color, we have darkened it by adding black. The primary colors are easiest to work with because they are the foundation of the color wheel. (We'll talk more about that later). But the primary colors don't have to be childlike and bright.

If you look closely at this card, you'll see that I have used Primary Colors. The red is tinted with white, the blue has been darken and the yellow is slightly lightened with white. I don't think this card looks childlike one bit. What do you think? By using the basic primary colors in a project, you can easily make a project that will coordinate every time. I will talk more later about the color wheel and how to always select colors that will complement your creations.

By the way, Close To My Heart Convention is over and the dust is beginning to settle. There are so many exciting things to tell you about....like a brand new Cricut Cartridge! I will share more in a later post. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Let's Party....The Close To My Heart Convention Has Begun!

The Close To My Heart Convention begins today! What fun...in the next few days, there will be all kinds of fun and exciting news about new products and tools. But, the announcement of new products means that some of our favorites will no longer be available. This year, the outgoing products will be retired on July 31st rather than the customary December 31st. The new information will be released over the next few days, but I can tell you that there will be eight brand new paper packets! Of the current paper packets, Lucky, Sophia, Fanfare and Mayberry will remain. All of our other favorites like Miracle, Mistletoe and Hooligans will no longer be available effective July 31st.

I always got a kick out of this stamp set...Party Animal. It was a companion to Hooligans and I don't know if it will be available after Hooligans has been discontinued. The set is so perfect not only for Halloween, but also, birthdays and party invitations.

My suggestion is to start thinking about anything that you absolutely want before it may be unavailable in August. As I learn of some of the new products or tools that will be available beginning August 1st, I'll be sure to let you know! For Now, Happy Crafting!

Using Color To Make Your Projects Pop!

The colors we use in our projects has a definite effect on the message they convey. In the last post, I shared how warm and cool colors effect the mood and appearance of our work. It all has to do with how the mind perceives the colors. Cool shades (blues, greens and purples) have a calming effect on our mood while the warm colors (reds, oranges and yellows) evoke a feeling of excitement and movement. So what happens when we mix cool and warm colors in the same project?

In this card, the main color is the cool color green. I've used red as an accent on the trim of the hat, mittens, buttons and the heart. Notice how the red and the yellow stands out? When you mix cool and warm colors together, the warm colors will visually dominate the project and the cool colors will receed. This is valuable to remember when you want to highlight a specific element of a project as I did with this one....the heart and the star.

This cute little snowman is "Twinkle" and he is a digi stamp by Michelle Perkett. You can find more information about her wonderful digi stamps here. The card is made for her current challenge "Cute as a Button." and information about the challenge can be found at the same link. The papers are from CTMH's Mistletoe packet and the card stock is New England Ivy. Twinkle has been colored with my Copics.

Adding a warm color as an accent on a cool color card is a very simple way to highlight an element and make your projects pop! More on using colors in my future posts. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Color and Mood...PPPC #7

As paper crafters, one of the easiest "tools" we have when completing our projects is color. Color is all around us and what choices we make help to convey the message we are sending in our projects. Believe it or not, there is "science" behind color theory. There has been a great deal of research into how color effects our mood and emotions. Cool colors like greens, blues and purples (think water and pastures) give us the feeling of calm. Warm colors, such as reds, yellows and oranges (think fire) portray the feeling of excitement and stimulate our senses. When designing your next project, think about what you are trying to express in your creation.

To demonstrate this, I have created 2 cards....exactly the same but done in different totally different colors...one in warm colors and one in cool colors.

Look at both cards....how do you perceive the one done in Sunset and Black versus the one done in Lilac Mist and Chocolate Brown? One of the great things about color is that there is no right or wrong answers. Color is personal preference, but, remember the theory behind how warm and cool colors effect the mood of your projects. Everyone has a favorite color. Again, there is no right or wrong answer, but when asked 75% of us will say that a cool color is our favorite. This is because people naturally seek calm and tranquility that a cool color evokes. Can you guess what my favorite color is??? :o)

So, the PPPC this time is to make a project that is either done in warm or cool colors. If you prefer cool colors, you should make a card using warm colors. If you gravitate to warm colors, make a card done in cool colors. I can't wait to see what everyone creates and as time goes on, I will share more insight into color use. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Now That We're Adding Texture To Our Projects, Let's Take It To The Next Level...

I hope that everyone has enjoyed my suggestions on adding texture to your projects, I thought it would be good to take it to the next level. How do we encorporate this texture in our layout? Well, I have an example for you...

This card is done on a 5 x 7 inch base of Colonial White. The striped paper is from a retired (sorry...it was wonderful) CTMH paper packet called Free Spirit. Because of the subject of the focal image, I wanted to give the appearance of a living room wall. The stripes reminded me of wall paper. I added the bottom panel of Indian Corn Blue to mimic wainscoting and the Colonial White crochet ribbon as a chair rail. To make the wainscoting, I scored the blue panel on the 1/2 mark, repeated it across the length of the panel and sponged it in the same shade ink to add shadow. The subject of your focal image should help you select the right colors for your project. The lamp and table image are "old fashion" looking which is why I chose the softer, heritage colors. If you were doing a scrapbook layout of little girls playing, these colors would probably not work well. You would choose hot pinks and bright greens. Colors that just wouldn't work for this project. Let your focal image (whether it be a stamped image or photographs) help you select the right colors, papers and texture for your projects.

Play with the textures and colors on your projects. Think about what your are trying to "say" with your project and textures and colors for your project will become much easier. For Now, Happy Crafting!

I'm So Excited!

I don't often put up posts about Close To My Heart specials, but this one is too much fun to let pass. A couple years ago, CTMH has an adorable paper packet called Animal Cookies. It was retired last year. This month, there is a very special deal and it includes the Animal Cookies Creative Basics Kit! A CB kit includes 12 sheets of pattern paper and a spool of ribbon! Animal Cookies is one of my all time favorites! In celebration of the event, I dug out my last 2 pieces of the packet and made this card.

Look how terrific the July Stamp of the Month works with Animal Cookies! Your technique tips for this card...Rock and Roll stamping and image placement. I used the large star burst image and first inked it in Dutch Blue. I then slightly touched it to my Tulip ink pad. The result is a random mix of both colors. I also stamped the image off the page. Don't always think that you need to stamp the full image. In this case, the full image is a circle. By only stamping a portion of it, I have created the illusion of movement on the card.

CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

The last day of every month signals the time for a special event....the Close To My Heart Stamp of the Month Blog Hop! This month it is a stamp set that celebrates the summer season...I say that because here in the United States our set is called "Celebrate America" and the Canadian Consultants have a special set just for Canada. You can see a picture of the set on my previous post along with the full list of participants.

So without further ado, I bring you my little portion of the blog hop. If you've arrived here from Susan's blog, you're on the right track. I wanted to do something fun this month so here is my first project.

I stamped two of the large star images and the fireworks. Then I triple heat embossed them with clear embossing powder. To do this, stamp your image. After you are sure that the ink is dry, swipe your VersaMark pad over the image and cover with the clear embossing powder. After it has cooled, repeat the process as many times as you like. This process will make your image appear as if it has been enameled. Each image was then cut out. I set eyelets in the stars and attached a pipe cleaner to the fireworks. The jar is an antique blue Mason Jar that I had in my garage. I filled it with shredded paper and battery operated lights. PLEASE if you try this, do not leave the jar unattended. The lights might get hot and they are resting on paper. Anyway, I tied the bow with "country" ribbon using my Bowdabra and added the stars and fireworks as I was making the bow. I attached the bow to the jar and the project was done! BTW - I tried several different ways to photograph the jar and this is the best I could do to get the lights to show.

My next project is a Christmas Card....yes a Christmas Card. I wanted to show that just because the stamp set is for July, doesn't mean that you can't use it for other occasions!

The flourish and sentiment are from one of my all time favorite CTMH sets...Snow Flurries. The star is from this month's stamp of the month!

One Last Card About Texture....All In The Ocean!

In the last few posts, I have talked about adding texture to your cards. Today, I have an example of another way to add texture.

If you look closely, you will see that dots and circles are repeated four times on elements of the project. First, the pattern paper from CTMH Magnifique, has repeating small circles. Next, the image (a great digi mermaid from Michelle Perkett...more about that later) has round pearls on her body and handle of her purse. If you look closely, the Sky blue band has been embossed with circles using a Cuttlebug folder. And, last but not least, I added a pearl in Eva's hair and three at the bottom to finish off the card. Repeating the elements in your projects will help with the continuity of the finished item.

Anyway, let me tell you a little about Eva the Glam Mermaid. I recently found this wonderful digi stamp studio. All the images are beautifully hand drawn by Michelle Perkett. Eva is just one of the many Mermaids, Fairies, Angels and you have to check out Woofie! Here is a link to her inspiration and design challenge studio. This card is made for her challenge this week...All in the Ocean. By the way, the image is colored with my Copics.

A Little More About Adding Texture To Your Projects

The last few days, I have been spending time working on ways to add texture to your projects. The card that I'm going to share today features "repeating" texture.

To repeat the texture elements on this card, I used my Swiss Dot Cuttlebug Embossing Folder to add the texture to the black layers. This is the first repeat. I then used the flower image from the Close To My Heart stamp set called "Spring Up" (B1365) to make the 3D flower. This is a terrific stamp set. The flower image has the dots. Once stamped, you cut it out along the lines provided and wrap it slightly to form the flower. I hold it together with either glue dots or Liquid Glass. The "dots" in the flower image repeat the embossed texture on the black layers. By the way, the cake image is from a set called "Precious Love" (C1444) and the flowers were colored with my Copics.

I really like how texture adds interest to a project. What do you think? For Now, Happy Crafting!

PPPC#6 - A Summer Theme

It's time for another challenge! A special thanks to all who participated in the last challenge. The layouts and cards were wonderful!

This time, in honor of summer, we challenge you to make a card that features something of the season. It can be a flower, a card for the 4th of July or perhaps a layout featuring a summer vacation. The choice is yours.

Here is my card. The image is from CTMH's set called Theme Park. It's been colored with my Copics and little bling has been added with a glitter pen and sparkles. In a previous post, I talked about adding texture to your projects. This is another example. If you look closely, the sweet leaf mat has been run through my Cuttlebug like the previous card, but in this case, I turned the mat over for a totally different look.

Neglected Yellows...A Copic Coloring Challenge

This week's Copic challenge at Simply Scrapping Crafts is to color an image using "yellow." Such a perfect color choice for summer. It is also the perfect color choice for me. For years now, I have collected pineapples. I'm not quite sure how or why I started liking pineapples other than the fact that they are both the Colonial and Pennsylvania Dutch symbol of "welcome." Here is my card for the challenge

The card is done on a 5 x 7 inch base of Cranberry card stock. The large mat is Close To My Heart's new Kraft card stock. I haven't used it before...what fun to have it in the stash. This card also features a texture panel for movement on a card. The outdoor denim panel is scored and then sanded. By the way, the image was a Christmas gift from a friend a few years ago....love this stamp!

I actually have some sad news about Simply Scrapping Crafts. Judy, the owner, has decided to close the site effective the end of the month. What a loss to the paper crafting community as SSC was one of the most friendly websites I've ever been involved with. Well, the good news, we have one more week to enjoy.

Trying a New Technique

Gosh, I didn't realize that it has been so long since I posted. But, that doesn't mean that I haven't been busy. Friday evening I attended a crop and met a new group of lovely ladies. I worked on a project that I can't post yet...heeheehee...Saturday I had my Card Workshop. What fun, we colored all day. You know, whether it be water colors, pencils or Copics, nothing helps you recapture your youth like coloring a stamped image! The rest of the time, I have been working on some new techniques to share and to teach at my classes.

Here is a new technique that I played with....adding texture to your focal image. Texture is so important on your cards and scrapbook layouts. It helps add movement and interest. Texture can be added in many different ways. You can add bling, 3D Flowers, multiple layers, dry embossing and in this case, I actually used my Cuttlebug to emboss my focal image.

This card is actually made for the Simply Scrapping Crafts weekly Copic challenge that will be posted later today. The challenge this week is to complete a card that uses Yellows in your image. Believe it or not, the image (from Flower Pot) is actually colored in all yellow or yellow-red shades. That is the beauty of Copics....with over 300 shades to choose from, your coloring possibilities are endless. Flower Pot is a current Close To My Heart stamp set that is just perfect for all kinds of coloring. I have used water color techniques, colored pencils and water based markers to color the image, too.

Don't be afraid to try different techniques. Sometimes you lose, but more often you'll find something new and interesting. Remember, our projects are ART! Art is an expression of our souls. As paper crafters, we express ourselves on paper! :o) For Now, Happy Crafting!

A Day of Creativity!

I was stuck at home today while I got my car inspected so I had plenty of time to create. The first card I made was for the upcoming Thursday Copic Challenge at Simply Scrapping Crafts. I can't post that card yet, but I promise I will later in the week.

The other day I treated myself to a Copic Air Brush system. We learned how to use it at the Copic Certification class last week. I bought the beginner system (ABS-2) because I wanted to see if I liked air brushing before I spent more money. With this system, the air grip handle screws directly onto a can of "air." It is a very simple and easy to use air brush. You merely slid the pens into the air grip and away you go!

To make this card, I used my Nesties to cut the oval. I randomly stamped a twig image from the CTMH "Something Splendid" stamp set. When the ink was dry, I grabbed my new air gun. First I sprayed the upper portion of the oval with BG15 using a swiping motion. Then I changed the pen color to B21 and sprayed another stripe. I continued the process with Y38, YG95 and YG99. When the area was dry, I stamped "dreams" in the upper left hand corner. The card stock colors include Cocoa, Olive and Honey and the pattern paper is from Mayberry. The "dots" are Liquid Pearls. Stay tuned, because as time goes on, I'll explain what the color numbers mean.

Another card I made today is for the current SSC Clean and Simple challenge. The challenge was to complete a card using buttons...

This is a fun and simple card using images from You and Me, Smiles and Baby Love. The colors include White Daisy, Hollyhock and Pear.

Papers Pads and Pictures Challenge #5

It's time for another challenge everyone! What is your favorite color? Seventy-five percent of all people say that their favorite color is a cool color....blues, greens, purples....colors that create a sense of calm. The warm colors often evoke strong emotions. Colors like red, yellow and orange remind us of warmth and fire. It's human nature to seek peace which accounts for the overwhelming response of color preference.

This challenge is for you to create a card using your favorite color combination. What appeals to you? What colors together bring you your personal peace? Create a project that expresses your feelings...

My favorite color combination is "blue and green." And, I just love turquoise or aqua with darker blue. This cute little guy is colored with my Copics and matted with CTMH Pacific and Lagoon. The pattern paper is from the Magnifique Paper Packet.

Nancy will be adding her card as soon as physically possible. Physically literally....she is down for the count with a hurt knee. We wish her well and hope that she will be back creating soon!

I had a great day on Tuesday! I took the Copic Certification Class. What a fun day and I think my coloring is improving already! These are the first cards I completed since the class...

Both of these cards were done for challenges over at Simply Scrapping Crafts. The first card is the design card I did for the Thursday Copic Challenge and the second card is for the Tuesday Color Challenge.

I'm Getting Ready for Copic Class!

I'm just about ready to head off for my Copic Certification class! I've been waiting to take this class for about 2 years and had to wait until Copic brought a class to the Philadelphia area. I'm so excited...can ya tell? :o)

I hope that I'll have some wonderful techniques and new ideas to share with you after class. One thing that I've been doing is looking closely at everything I see. I want to get "natural" shading in my head so I'll be able to replicate it in my work. I always teach that nature is not perfect and the world is not flat. We need to add depth and texture to our work. One of the easiest things to study are flowers and my garden is a great classroom.

These are recent photos taken in my garden...wish studying was like this umpteen years ago when I was in school! For Now, Happy Crafting!

It's Never Too Early To Start...Heart 2 Heart Challenge

I was surfing the internet today looking for an interesting challenge to participate in and I remembered the Heart 2 Heart Challenge. The current challenge is a sketch so it was perfect to make this afternoon.

Now, I realize that it is only June, but it is never to early to start making Holiday Cards especially with my Artfire Studio.

The challenge features Mistletoe and Bliss Pattern Papers. An interesting combination, what do you think? Both the sentiment and image are from a CTMH set called "Snow Days." I colored the image with the following Copics: C0, C1, C5, W2, BG10, BG70, B000, B21, Y000, YG95. I added Prisma Glitter for a little bling on both the image and the sentiment but try as I might (10 photos later) the glitter hardly shows.

It's never to early to start working on those Holiday Cards...don't make too many thought because the new CTMH Idea Book with new Holiday papers will be released later this summer. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Simply Scrapping Crafts Copic Challenge

Don't know if you remember or not, but I am on a design team over at Simply Scrapping Crafts. It is a terrific site that includes a daily challenge...and you all know how I like challenges! Thursday is the Copic Challenge. This weeks challenge was to make a card where the focal point was colored with Copics and the card is embellished with buttons and bows.

One of the things I always try to remember (that I think this challenge emphases) is when you have a "fancy" focal point, do not clutter the rest of the card with embellishments that could distract from the main image.

This cute little A2 card is made using papers from CTMH's Mayberry paper packet and Colonial White, Smoothie and Olive card stock. The focal image and sentiment are from "Love You Forever" (C1398) and the faux stitching is from "Stitched Together" (C1459.)

I colored the image using a number of Copics...

Nest - E00, E25, E77
Flower and Leaves - R02, R20, R29, YG01, YG05, YG95

CTMH June Blog Hop Time!

Another month has passed so that means it's Blog Hop time again! This month, CTMH features a very usable set called Jubilation. It contains 24 stamps covering a wide variety of Holidays and Celebrations. Several of the stamps are just perfect when used with the 1 1/4 inch punch!

If you've arrived here from LeAnne's Blog, you're on the right track. I wanted to come up with something "fun" so I altered an "Iris" brand card organizer.

The mat card stock is Olive and Outdoor Denim and the pattern paper is from Lucky. I used Irresitables sponged in Sunset for the word "Cards" and the flourishes. The leaf was sponged in Olive. What is fun about this set is look closely at the 3D flower. The petals are one of the stamps. I merely stamped it 3 times, cut it out and poked a brad through the center. :o)

I always make a card for these blog hops so here it is...

The card is also made using the reverse side of a piece from "Lucky." The base is Colonial White and the torn piece is Outdoor Denim that has been scored. To make the mat for the snowflake, I punched 5 scallop circles using the CTMH 2 inch scallop punch. I sponged the edges, glued them together and then glued the stamped snowflake that was punched out with the 1 1/4 punch.

City Crafter Challenge Blog...."I've Been Framed!"

I have always enjoyed the City Crafter Challenge Blog's weekly challenges. This week is another fun challenge called "I've Been Framed!"

I took the challenge literally and rummaged through my stash to find a canvas frame to decorate. I also wanted to find an appropriate sentiment for my embellished frame.

The pattern paper background is from a CTMH paper packet called Sophia. The sentiment, stamped flower, leaf and 3D flower are all from a stamp set called "Heartfelt Treasures." I added a few sparkles and the button for a little bling. By the way, I colored the 3D flower with my Copics.

PPPC#4 A "Z" Fold Card

It's time again for another Papers Pads and Pictures Challenge. This challenge is a fancy fold card challenge. The sketch is designed by our Lead Designer, Nancy. The card is done on a 4 1/4 x 12 inch base and is scored and folded to for a "Z." The trick to this card is the cute little one inch square. These squares cover the fold, act as a closure and give you an opportunity to use up all those little scraps and left over stickers!

This is my card featuring CTMH Kraft Paper, Magnifique, Colonial White and Sky. The ink colors are Pacifica, Lagoon and Sky and the images are from "Dream Big" and "Tag the Occasion." Making the card is easy...score your base piece at the 3 1/4 and 6 1/2 inch mark and fold in the shape of a "Z". Visit Nancy's Blog for the full directions on how to complete the card. It's time for a new Copic Challenge at the Simply Scrapping Crafts Site. This week's challenge is to create a card that shows "summer fun." Here are my cards for the challenge...

The first card features a retired CTMH stamp set called Thrill Ride. It is a fun set that includes several little children on amusement rides. The second card is a hummingbird from my stash.

You And Me and Close To My Heart!

I haven't had the opportunity to mention that this month, Close To My Heart has a terrific kit in celebration of National Scrapbooking Month. The kit is called "You And Me" and contains papers, a D sized stamp set, Opaques, Chipboard and Ribbon! Wow...what a kit!

Ok, it's National Scrapbooking Month, but give me paper and I have to make a card. :o) This card is an A2 tent fold card that features all the goodies from kit. The only things I added were the Chocolate card base and the Chocolate and Smoothie Inks. The pattern papers, chipboard circle, Opaques (pearls) and stamped tickets, faux stitching and the sentiment are all in the kit!

Well, since it is actually a scrapbooking kit, I had to share the Layout that I completed using this kit. If you remember, I mentioned earlier that I had lost a good friend earlier this month. Since the papers work perfectly for a masculine layout, I decided to do a LO in his memory.

I did change the layout slightly from the included kit sketch. Instead of using the chipboard letters for the title, I used the Bingo Alphabet (D1478) for "remember." I stamped each letter and punched them out using the 1 1/4 circle punch. I matted them using a 1 1/2 punch that I had in my stash. I also added the Fleur De Lees instead of the tickets.

I tried something on this layout that I've never done before. CTMH has these terrific gizmo's called "Flip Flaps." If you look closely at the 2nd photo of the LO, you'll see that the pictures are different. What "Flip Flaps" allow you to do is add additional photos to a LO without altering the sketch. They come in different sizes and easily attach to your page protectors! I used a 4 x 6 "Flip Flap" here, but they also come in 12 inch lengths and a variety of widths. I don't know why I waited so long to use them!

One more thing about this terrific kit...If you sign up to be a Consultant this month you will receive it free! And, if you sign up this month to be a Consultant, the cost is a mere $65! A Great Copic Coloring Challenge

Everyone should stop on by and check out this great craft website. It's called Simply Scrapping Crafts. There are daily challenges, fun forums and lots of tutorials. The members are very friendly and I've met a boat load of new friends. I'm a member of the Thursday Challenge Design Team....it's a Copic Marker challenge.

Because I was working the Expo, I didn't have a chance to post my card for this week. The challenge this week is to complete a graduation card.

My card was this fun kindergarten card. The image and sentiment are from a retired CTMH set called School Zone. The pattern paper is from Mayberry and the card stock is Smoothie, Cocoa and Colonial White. I just love the sentiment!

City Crafter Challenge #56

I've always enjoyed the challenges at City Crafter Challenge Blog and unfortunately haven't had the time to participate in the past few weeks. This week's challenge is to create something "By the Sea." For this challenge, I chose one of my favorite Close To My Heart stamp sets called "Summer Breeze."

I purposely chose a simple sketch to show off the sailboat. The pattern paper is from a paper packet called Lucky and the card stock is Colonial White, Outdoor Denim, and Olive. The inks colors include Outdoor Denim, Cocoa and Bamboo. The sailboat is colored with my Copics...BG10, BG15, BG70, B000, B21, B23, E00, E07, C0, C1 and W2.

Papers Pads and Pictures Challenge #3

I'm On A Copic Design Team!!!

I haven't had a chance to post recently for reasons that I'll explain a little later...but, I wanted to let you know that while I was away, I became a member of a Copic Design Team! I was surfing the net for some fun challenges one day and stumbled into a site called Simple Scrapping Crafts. I was fascinated by the site. It is warm and welcoming, and designed for both scrapbookers and card markers. There is a different challenge every day. There are tutorials and fun forum chatter. As I was checking out the challenges, I discovered that they were in need of a Copic Design Team Member. Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained and several days later, here I am...one of their Design Team Members!

The first Thursday Copic Challenge I participated in as a Design Team Member is a challenge to create a card that is inspired by a movie. Now for the reason that I haven't had the opportunity to post recently. A very dear friend of mine lost his battle with Cancer during the past week. In his memory, I created a card inspired by the movie "Forever Young." It is a movie about test pilot who is cryogenicly frozen in 1939 and awoken in the present day. Here is the card that I completed...

The card is done on a 5 x 7 inch base of Colonial White. It is accented with CTMH Lucky B/T Duo pattern paper, Olive and Outdoor Denim Card Stock. The image and sentiment are both from the CTMH set called Summer Breezes. And of course, the image is colored with my copics.

CTMH May Stamp of the Month Blog Hop

It's time again for the CTMH Stamp of the Month Blog Hop! Available beginning tomorrow is a great stamp set called "Chairs to You." A Handmade Graduation Card

I think one of the hardest things to do is make a masculine card. There is always the tendency to add a bobble or a bow. The challenge today at 365 Cards is to make a card that that you could give to anyone, wasn't too personal, not gender specific and it had to have a sentiment. What a mouthful! :o)

This is an A2 sized tent fold card. The pattern paper is from the CTMH paper packet called Passages. The sentiment and Graduation Cap are from a set called "You Did It." I stamped the Cap and cut it out. The tassel is made from embroidery floss.

Mother's Day Card Using Sophia Papers

I certainly hope that everyone had a pleasant day yesterday. The weather here in the Philly area was beautiful. I even got the chance to sit on my patio for a little while. As my Step-Dad always said, "Time marches on" so with Easter Sunday past us, it's now time to focus on Spring flowers!

I made this card for the 365 Cards Challenge Day 55. The challenge was a sketch challenge and you can find it by clicking on the link. I wanted to make a card using flowers. I work really hard in my garden in the spring and summer and having the opportunity to sit outside yesterday really got me in the mood. The image comes from a CTMH set called "Flower Pot." I love the set. It includes several pots, a window with shutters and all kinds of flowers that fit perfectly into the pots. You decide the look that you want. You can color them with anything you wish...I used my Copics. The "stitching" is from a set a just got called "Stitched Together." It includes a number of images that give the appearance of hand stitching. I like to stitch on cards, but sometimes it just isn't time effective. This set is perfect for the simulation of stitching. By the way, the pattern paper is from Sophia. Most people recognize Sophia for the wonderful pinks, but the reverse side is this subtle yellow. I used Goldrush and Creme Brulee for my accents. The double sided CTMH paper packets are so versatile.

I had to share this beautiful tulip that is blooming in my garden. I have a shade garden so I don't get tulips every year...a true treat! For Now, Happy Crafting!

I used CTMH Sweetheart pattern paper, White Daisy and Cotton Candy card stock. The image is from last month's stamp of the month and it had to be colored with my Copics.

A Gate Fold Card and the CTMH April Stamp of the Month

I have always enjoyed making fun fold cards. Today, I made a Gate Fold card for the City Crafter Challenge Blog's Weekly Challenge #53. The challenge was to do just this...make a Gate Fold Card. There are many ways to score the folds. You need a sheet of card stock that is 12 x 6 inches. You score and fold on the long side at the 3 and 9 inch marks. When folded, the card will meet perfectly in the center. You then need some way to hold the card closed. This is usually done with an overlapping piece of card stock and then tied with a ribbon. You could also hold it closed with Velcro. Easy peazzy and makes for a very interesting card! Now for my card...

I started with a CTMH Hollyhock card base. I matted each side with pieces of Colonial White and Blush. The Blush was scored at the 1/2 marks to replicate the slates of a gate. I sponged both pieces in Hollyhock. The closure piece is made from a piece of Hollyhock that has been punched with my MS punch around the page punches. The gate image is from a terrific set I have had for years from Artist Impressions. The set is made specifically for water coloring. I stamped the gate image in Cocoa and then water colored using Gray Wool, Gray Flannel and Cocoa. The set also includes a variety of flower, greenery, grass and stone images that you randomly stamp to complete your scene. Now for the inside...

The Flower Pot images are done the same way as the gate. The pot is stamped and water colored and then the flowers and greenery are added. The sentiment is from the CTMH April Stamp of the Month (only available through the end of the month.) I even added the stepping stones on the bottom of each panel to reflect the message of the sentiment.

Fancy fold cards and fun and always delight the receiver. Just remember to score at the 3 and 9 inch mark and you've got it! Thanks again to the gals at City Crafter Challenge Blog for another fun challenge. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Mix the New with the Old

The Day 52 challenge at 365 Cards is called Spring Cleaning. The challenge is to rummage through your stash and make a card that contains 2 pieces of pattern paper that you have had for at least a year, a piece of ribbon that you have had for 2 years and something that you have had since you started paper crafting. I rummaged through my stash and this is what I came up with...

Doing the unexpected is so much fun. I just recently received the CTMH stamp called "Heartfelt Treasures." It is the perfect companion for the Sophia Paper Packet. As I was going through my "old" pattern papers, I realized that the leaf would work well with the pattern in "That's Amore," a paper packet that was released 2 years ago. The flower image has been stamped in Chocolate twice on Colonial White paper and then colored with my Copics. I cut out the images and attached them after curling the edges upward. The center piece was also stamped, colored, cut out and attached. The leaf is also from the same set as is the sentiment. By the way, I have had the pattern paper and ribbon for 2 years and I used a corner rounder tool that I bought at the first home demo I attended about 15 years ago...WOW... :o)

My point to all of this...May times we see a stamp set in an Idea Book or Catalogue that is paired with a particular paper pattern and think that the two must be used together. Don't be afraid to study your stamps and papers and mix and match. Many times stamp sets will with with totally unexpected papers. Have you ever tried mixing things up? For Now, Happy Crafting!

Last evening I received some exciting news. I will be attending the Copic Certification Class in June. I can't wait to learn more about the markers. To celebrate the occasion, I had to make this card.

I followed today's 365 Cards Recipe Challenge (#51). The challenge was to complete a card with the following...one piece of pattern paper, twine, 3 buttons, a stamped image, a sentiment and the card was to be 4 x 4 inches. My image and sentiment are from a CTMH set called Ms. Scrapbook. I had to color it with my Copics! :o) For Now, Happy Crafting!

Experimenting With Color...CTMH Mayberry Papers

One of the most important and sometimes challenging aspects of creating a card or scrapbook layout is the use of color. We accumulate piles of paper and never quite know what "goes together." A great thing about the Close To My Heart paper packets is that all of the "matching" has been done for you! There is actually scientific theory behind why colors match and why certain colors are more appealing to our eyes. I have "tested" the CTMH colors and they are scientifically accurate! In the coming weeks, I shall share some of the theory and ways to select pleasing colors, but for now, keep in mind that if it is pleasing to your eye, it is never wrong.

The 365 Cards Blog Challenge Day 49 is a challenge for us to use colors on a card that we would not normally "put together." I chose to use the Mayberry Paper Packet. My card base is done in Olive with a Cocoa mat. Prior to this challenge, I would not have made Olive and Cocoa as the focal colors of my project.

I purposely did a very simple layout because I wanted to see if the colors appealed to me before I made a more elaborate card. Remember, there is a "reason" that our eye is drawn to certain color combinations and in the coming weeks, I will share those reasons. The more important thing is to use colors that appeal to YOUR eye. For Now, Happy Crafting!

CTMH Birthday Card Using Sophia Paper Packet

Happy Birthday to the City Crafter Challenge Blog! This week is their 1st Birthday. Their challenge was to case the card highlighted on their blog. It is a lovely card and included a tiered cake, flowers and flourishes. Pop on over to their blog to see the card... I wanted to use a tiered cake so I immediately reached for a favorite of mine called "Piece of Cake." I really do like this CTMH set. I also wanted to play with a new set I just received called "Heartfelt Treasures." It is going to become a favorite, too! I really like the Sophia Paper Packet! It is so cheerful and reminds me of much needed Spring. The cake and sentiment are from Piece of Cake and the flourishes and cut out flowers are from Heartfelt Treasures. The colors include White Daisy, Hollyhock and Pear. I added some glitter and sparkles because what birthday card is complete without bling. Recycle and Reuse Heart 2 Heart Challenge

Oh boy, I'm running around like a chicken today with the my new Blog Challenge starting today (check it out here) and prepping for my card workshop tomorrow! As I was finishing my "bonus" project for my Club Members tomorrow, I realized that it fit in perfectly with the current Heart 2 Heart Challenge. The current challenge is to reuse or recycle something in your project. Well, I recycled a Valentine Gift Bag and made it an Easter Treat Bag. The bunny image is from a sweet My Acrylix set called Bunny Love (B1324.) The images are lined images and perfect for coloring. I plan on introducing them to the use of a blender pen. Announcing the Papers Pads and Pictures Project Challenge!!

After a great deal of planning and work, the day is finally here! Papers Pads and Pictures is beginning a Blog Challenge!!! I know that there are lots of challenges out there, but I wanted this challenge to be a little different. Every other week on a Friday, I will be announcing a new challenge. A "winner" along with "highlight" artists will be announced 2 days after the challenge closes. Everyone will have 2 weeks to complete the challenge. I have prizes and surprises planned along the way! I want this challenge to be as fun as it is informative so each challenge will include a tip or technique. Challenges should not be about just making a project, but also about helping us grow as artisians! This challenge is open to all paper crafters...Please show us your projects...scrapbook layouts, altered items, cards. We invite all skill levels to play along...after all, I WANT everyone to learn and grow. You do not have to use Close To My Heart products to play along, but you will be seeing great CTMH supplies in our samples. This challenge is being done with the help of one of my very talented friends, Nancy. She will be the Lead Designer for all of our artwork. Check out her terrific blog and her entertaining YouTube videos.

Here are some examples made with this sketch...

Nancy made the cute little bunny and I made the other two samples. Remember, with the idea of a sketch is to give ideas for layouts, so if you don't have a 4 inch oval, you can use a square. Feel free to alter the sketch a little, but keep with the basic design. Also, this is a "project" challenge...use this sketch on a scrapbook layout, on the top of a decorated box...you decide and don't forget to post your work and leave a comment. Now, for the fun part...everyone who joins in the fun these next two weeks will be eligible for a prize! We will also have cool blinkies for your very own web pages, blogs and facebook. I will be using a random generator to select the receipent of a complete CTMH Level 2 Wings Paper Packet and a matching "A" size stamp set called "A Flitter." CTMH - Fanfair Paper!

I realized that I hadn't shown you one of the paper packets in the current Idea Book...Fanfare. Fanfare is fun, bright and perfect for birthdays, Summer Holiday's and Congratulations.

There is a lot to chat about on this one 5 x 7 card so let me get started....

The large star was done using a technique called "tissue stamping." If you look closely, you can see that the image is actually a mixture of red and yellow. I took a paper towel and rubbed it on my stamp pad. I then blotted the stamp. I repeated the process several times using both colors of ink. Another great thing about a clear stamp is that you can see when you have enough ink on the image. I cut the star out after it was stamped.

The fan folded "star" is the upper right corner is scored, accordion folded and held together with glue dots and Liquid Glass. I scored and sanded. I even stamped on ribbon!

Last but not least is the card sketch is from CTMH's "Wishes" sketch book. I just love that book! It is filled with sketches, tips and ideas. There is even a CD included that is used to make fun shapes like the "wind swept" Cranberry part of the card. All you need to do is print out the template and cut your card stock. So easy... As a matter of fact, the sketch for this card is called "Windswept."

Fanfare is a fun paper packet. I can see you using it for so many things. For Now, Happy Crafting!

CTMH Wedding Card Using Bliss

I finished another card! :o) This one is for the Card Pattern Weekly Sketch Challenge 110. I love challenges...have I said that before??? I think that a challenge does just that. It helps us try things that we wouldn't normally do and to help us augment our creativity. Keep checking back here later in the week too, for more news about challenges... :o) Over the weekend, I was fortunate enough to spend Saturday evening at a lovely Wedding in Center City Philadelphia. It put me in the mood to make a Wedding Card...

The cake image is from a CTMH set called Precious Love (C1444). I heat embossed it, cut it out and colored it with my Copics. I added a few Opaques for bling. The pattern paper is from a Paper Packet called Bliss which is perfect for Weddings and Heritage scrapbooking. The blue is Moonstruck. I haven't seen Moonstruck used with Bliss, but I thought the shade worked well with the gray tones of Bliss. What do you think?

CTMH "Miracle" Get Well Card

One of my all time favorite Close To My Heart Paper Packets is Miracle. I love the combination of the Crystal Blue and Sweet Leaf green. I have used it for everything from scrapbook layouts, to 3D altered projects to all kinds of cards. For the 365 Cards sketch challenge Day 41, I have once again used this paper packet. Here is the sketch...

And, now for my card...

One of the things that makes Mircle so much fun to work with is the matching chipboard. The chipboard is called Miracle Irresistables. Each chipboard piece coordinates perfectly with the paper. If you look closely, you'll see the the ink resist images. The pieces are designed so that when you sponge them with ink, a pattern emerges. So fun! The sentiment is from a stamp set called Tasty Treats. Not only is this set a great set for recipes, but it also has a number of sentiments that work for a number of cards. I finished off the card with Colonial White ribbon, and Bamboo, Crystal Blue and Colonial White card stock. Those are Sweet Leaf sparkles for just a touch of bling!

City Crafter Challenge #51 - Cheer Up

After missing a week, I'm back giving the City Crafter Challenge Blog's challenge #51 a whirl. The challenge is called "Cheer Up" and participants are to make a "Thinking of You" or "Get Well" card. The spin was that you also needed to use something digital on the card. As I was thinking about what to make, I remembered this cute digi stamp that I had downloaded about 2 years ago. I wish I could give credit to the designer, but alas, I didn't record that info. Thanks to whomever it is as I really do like this image! :o)

I colored that "cool cat" with my Copics. The sentiment is from "Sweet Treats" a CTMH set that I use all the time. I used some retired CTMH colors that I have always liked...Ocean and Breeze. I added just a few sparkles for bling.

Close To My Heart Mix and Mingle Picture Frame

A little while ago, I posted about CTMH's Mix and Mingle Acrylic Albums and showed you a Bell Pull that I had made. It is a fun piece and one of the projects that I will be teaching at my upcoming workshop. A Mix and Mingle Album is a fun alterable item that includes 5 pieces of chipboard and 3 pieces of coordinating acrylic. I had a few pieces left over after the Bell Pull, so, here is the Mix and Mingle Photo Frame that I will also be featuring in my workshop on April 16th.

Just like the Bell Pull that I made, this photo frame features the Miracle Paper Packet. The roses were made using a stamp set called "Spring Up." What a fun stamp set. One of the images is a flower with a squiggle line in it. After you stamp the image, it is cut out and rolled to form the roses....a very quick and easy way to make paper flowers. An easy way to secure the rolled rose is with Liquid Glass. One can just not say enough about Liquid Glass. It is an adhesive, a texturing agent, a way to create an ink resist image...the possibilities are endless. I even used Liquid Glass to adhere the strips of Bamboo card stock on the center acrylic frame. By the way, those are Mocha Opaques in the center of the paper roses.

CTMH and Studio J

I have not fallen off the face of the Earth, but I did almost fall into the Gulf of Mexico! Yes, I have just returned from a terrific long weekend on the panhandle of Florida. I was at a Close To My Heart Leadershare. It was an unexpected treat and I am so glad that I was able to attend. What is Leadershare you ask? It was a weekend gathering of CTMH Consultants. We learned all kinds of great information and had a wonderful time together.

One of the sessions focused on Close To My Heart's online scrapbooking program. I admit that I really haven't done much with Studio J since it was introduced about a year ago, but after listening to the lecture by one of the Corporate Representatives, I was determined to learn to work with it more than I had in the past.

All I can say is "WOW!" I have done some digital scrapbooking in the past but never have I worked with a sophisticated and easy program. Unlike the average digital scrapbook program, Studio J is done totally on the computer. There is no software that needs to be downloaded. New embellishments, new papers and new layouts are immediately available. The "kits' include many of the current CTMH paper packets, some all time favorites and a few members only kits. You never have to pay to "upgrade" your program. You can experiment and design to your heart's content. You only pay for printing. There are even a variety of Studio J memberships that cut the cost of printing and offer all kinds of perks like free shipping and page protectors! In a day, I was able to scrapbook my ENTIRE trip to Leadershare in Navarre Florida!

Babies, Buttons and Bows

I posted earlier in the week, that there was a run on baby challenges. Well, here is my next completed Baby Card for the City Crafter Challenge Blog. Their challenge this week was to create a baby card with buttons and bows.

I wanted to do a totally unique baby card...hence the red and gold. I just can't resist the image of the little girl drinking her milk and the kitten eagerly awaiting the drops. :o) Perhaps I should have said "Sweet Babies."

Sometimes it is fun to make a card that is not done in the "expected" colors or the "expected" sketch. What do you think? For Now, Happy Crafting!

A Clean and Simple Birthday Card

Many times, it is true...."Less is More." That is exactly the premise behind creating a Clean and Simple (CAS) card. The focus is on the design, not the number of layers, not the number of buttons and not the number of bows. Using that idea, I created this fun Birthday Card.

I wanted to create a card where the focus would be on the message of this card. There are not multiple layers or embellishments to distract the eye from the cute little bunny giggling as he is thinking about the recipient's age. hehehe...

To make this card, I started out with a 5 1/2 x 4/14 inch base of Colonial White. I used Sunset and Lagoon card stock and a small strip of pattern paper from Magnifique. The bunny is from CTMH's current STOM called Sensational Season. It is a wonderful stamp set designed for Easter. But, as you can see, I was able to use the image for the birthday card. It is quite a versatile set. It is only available through the end of the month and you can see the full stamp set on my website. Anyway, I used the word bubble that is contained in a set called Party Animal and letters from the set called Tiny Typewriter. "Fifty is Nifty" is from a retired CTMH set that was in my stash.

Challenge Day 24 at 365 Cards blog was to complete a card using these letters of the alphabet...M = Markers, N = Numbers and O = Orange. What a cute challenge. For the "M," I colored the bunny with my Copic Markers. Fifty is the Number and I highlighted the card with orange (sunset.)

A Clean and Simple design really helps you add focus to the images on your projects. In many cases, less really is more. For Now, Happy Crafting!

Hope For Japan

Repeating Elements in a Monocromatic Color Scheme Card

One of the color theories I teach is how to pick colors that work well together. The simplest way to ensure that you get a color combo that works well together is to do a monochromatic color scheme. That is, use only one base color on your project. If you make a card or scrapbook layout that uses the tints (the base color which is lightened with white) and shades (base color that is darkened with black) you are sure to get a card that coordinates beautifully!

Today, I found a sketch challenge at Card Patterns Sketch Blog that helps me demonstrate this idea very easily. First here is the sketch...

And now for my card...
I combined 2 shades of green...CTMH's New England Ivy and Sweet Leaf to complete the monochromatic look. The pattern paper is the Sweet Leaf side of one of the sheets from the Wings paper packet.

In order to add some interest to the 2 shades of green, I repeated the "dot" elements found in the pattern paper by embossing the darker New England Ivy with my Cuttlebug Swiss Dots folder. The ribbon I used even helps to carry the "dot" theme. Lastly, I selected the snail image on purpose for this card. Do you see how his body is circular and his eyes are dots? Once again, the image helps to carry the theme.

Using monochromatic color scheme on a project is a sure way to ensure that your colors will always "match." Make sure you repeat a simple element, at least once...twice is better, in order to add interest and texture. BTW - a shout out to Card Patterns Sketch blog...I love this sketch. "Hope For Japan"

Thank You Card With Mayberry Paper

The never ending quest to find more challenges. This morning was no different and here is one of the cards I've made today.

This unique thank you card is done in shades of Honey and Cocoa and the Mayberry CTMH paper packet. The window box image is from a stamp set called "Flower Pot." The flowers were first stamped and then the pot was stamped on Cocoa card stock, cut out and sanded to give the aged look. I attached it just at the stems to give it a realistic look. The Mocha Opaques were added to the centers of the flowers for just a touch of bling.

The sketch I used is from one of the challenges I found this morning on the Get Sketchy Blog. Quite an interesting sketch, don't you think? :o)

The other challenge I found this morning is called the ABC Challenge. This week's challenge is called "Q is for Quilting or Sewing." It gave me the opportunity to try out this new gizmo I bought that pokes the holes in the paper for hand stitching. More about my new toy in a later post.

Oh Baby...A Close To My Heart Baby Card

As you know, I've been doing all kinds of challenges recently. I love challenges. I think they enable you to see not only the creative work of others, but also, helps you increase your ability to "think out of the box." Challenges help you to explore what is in your stash, help you to find ways to use your supplies that perhaps you hadn't thought of and try some ideas and techniques that you wouldn't have done.

Having said all that, I've noticed that for some odd reason, this week I am finding "baby" challenges. So, expect to see a baby cards from me in the next few days. :o) Here is my first...

Over at 365 Cards, the challenge Day 21 was not really a "baby" challenge but it screamed baby to me the minute I read it. It is called the "ABC's of Crafting." We were to use at least one of the following...letter stickers, something blue and a circle. I immediately thought of those old fashioned wooden baby blocks. Do they still make them? I cut squares of bamboo card stock and scored it on the 1/16th inch mark all the way across. I also scored the edge on all four sides to create the illusion of a block. After sanding and ink distressing, I attached the sticker letters A, B, C that were inked in Sweet Leaf, Crystal Blue and Sorbet. Faux baby blocks... Using my Cuttlebug, I embossed 2 layers and scored the other. The image is from a Close To My Heart set called "Sweet Baby." I attached the Sorbet ribbon and the card was done.

The Heart 2 Heart Challenge blog's theme for the week is also "Babies." The requirements for that challenge weren't quite as specific...Just a card with a Baby Theme.

The point of this card, almost like my last post, if you think about what is in your stash and add a touch of creativity, you can always rise to the "challenge." Hence, my faux baby blocks. For Now, Happy Crafting!

City Crafter Challenge #48

Well, I have to say that this week's challenge over at City Crafter Challenge Blog has had me going... :o) The challenge this week is to create a card with a crown. I rummaged through EVERY stamp I owned and didn't have one crown! AHHH...next I turned to my Cricut and finally found something!

The card is a 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch trifold base. The cartridge I used is called Paisley. Each Cricut cartridge has different options for images, cards and shapes...all depends on the individual cartridge. This particular cartridge has the option for the trifold card. The crown is cut from the center and there are small cuts and a tab on the back. I then used another option to cut the pattern paper image to place over the White Daisy card stock base. I lined the "hole" created by the crown cut out inside with white glitter paper. I gathered the pink ribbon, added the beads to the jewelry finding, attached the photo clip and buttons and lastly matted the sentiment.

Close To My Heart Accordion Album

I haven't been around much in the last few days, but that doesn't mean that I wasn't crafting! I've spent the last few days putting the final touches on tomorrow's workshop called a Perfect Day Accordion Album. Here is what we will be making tomorrow...

The paper packet we will be using is regretfully retired, but I was able to secure a number of the packets at a reduced rate. My goal was to introduce my participants (many of whom are new to Close To My Heart) about the value of a CTMH paper packet...12 sheets or pattern paper and 10 sheets of card stock for $12.95! Wow! CTMH papers are terrific and you can't beat that price with a stick! The accordion albums are not retired at make such fun projects and great gifts!

I designed the pages my self and each person will receive the paper packet, album, all the embellishments and detailed instructions and sketches so they will be able to duplicate the album using any paper packet they chose. I do paper craft workshops at my studio at least monthly. If you live in the Philadelphia PA area, watch for future workshops. I work really hard at coming up with creative classes that focus new techniques and completed projects. I would love to have you join in on the fun!

Working With Acrylic Cards and 365 Cards Day 13 Challenge

A fun new trend is working with acrylics. There are acrylic albums (I did a bell pull and highlighted here), acrylic frames and acrylic cards. What ever you do on a paper card, you can do on an acrylic card.

If you look closely, you will see that the scallop image on the bottom left is on the outside of the card along with the paper flowers. The scallop sentiment is on the inside and meant to show through to the outside. The trick is to remember that when you attach an image to the inside, you need to cover your adhesive marks on the inside.
I put a dollop of clear gel glue on the Juniper Scallop on the outside and made sure that it didn't show on the inside by attaching the Easter Egg image on the inside covering the spot. CTMH Liquid Glass also works very well for attaching images to acrylics. The edge of the acrylic card shows and you can look straight through the front of the card to the plastic eggs in the background.

For the back of the card, and to provide a spot to personalize, I made a duplicate of the mat that shows through the front and attached it to the back. The adhesive marks are covered on both sides. And, here is the whole card again...
A few more details about the card...the cute little bunny and eggs are from CTMH's Bunny Love (B1324). The bunny was colored and shaded using the inks from stamp pads and a blending pen. "Happy Easter" is a combination of a retired CTMH stamp set and "Tag the Occasion." The acrylic card item number is Z1323.

BTW - this card is done for 365 Cards Challenge Day 13. I love their daily challenges. This challenge was to complete a card using this sketch.

A Handmade Easter Card using CTMH Sophia Papers

I am always looking for ideas for cards that a little different. I recently found the sketch on Splitcoast Stampers that fit the bill for this Easter card.

Sophia is a wonderfully bright paper packet that includes shades of Blush, Goldrush, Hollyhock and Pear. This card doesn't use Goldrush but trust me the rich gold color is in the packet. I selected an image for Carefree Days for the flowers. Each square is 1 1/4 and matted with 1 1/2 Hollyhock paper. I purposely stamped the flower image off center to add interest and movement. "Happy" is from my go to stamp set called "Tag the Occasion." "Easter" is from a retired set. :o( If you look closely, you'll see that I scored and sanded the top layer. That is what I love about CTMH's white core card stock. It is so simple to add texture to a card. The card stock, when sanded with even a nail file, reveals the white core. With this technique, no two cards ever appear the same! You can truly create one of a kind cards even if you are doing an assembly line of bulk cards!

I love trying new techniques and find that sometimes the simplest are the best. For Now, Happy Crafting!

I Did It!

Whooo Who! I did it! I got all the challenges done for this weeks 365 Cards challenges. Boy did that put me to the test. Nothing like getting up at 5:00am just to finish cards. :o)

Here is Day 11. We were to "re-purpose" Holiday Paper. I actually talked about this in a recent post! :o) I used Valentine paper to make a Mother's Day Card.

Now, here is Day 12..."Keep It Simple." Pattern paper, sentiment and embellishment...

Now that I have completed all of these cards, I better go do my dishes. :o) For Now, Happy Crafting!

City Crafter Challenge #47

This week's challenge and City Crafter Challenge Blog was to make a card with a pocket. This was a fun challenge because I really had to think! :o)

As I was rummaging in my stash, I found this often overlooked paper packet called "Wings Creative Basics." I love this striped paper. The card is done on an A2 base. The little pocket has been scored and sanded. The image on the tag was stamped and then colored with a blending pen. I used two new "toys" when making this card...I love new toys. I have wanted these nesting oval punches for eons. The other new "toy" is a bottle of Ranger Liquid Pearls. What fun. Liquid Pearls are like Stickles but opaque.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World

Day 9 of this week's 365 Cards Challenge is to "Do That Decade." The decade that we were to draw inspiration from was the 90's. Well, let's see, in the 90's, I got married, bought a house, worked on my career, turned ??? A lot went on in the 90's....collectively we prepared for Y2K, we lived the first Gulf War and we watched Seinfeld on TV. Then there was Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. IZ as he was know, was a Hawaiian performer. In 1993 he released a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World." If you have never heard it, take a few minutes to listen to it on You Tube. It is easy to find.

It is from this song, that I draw my inspiration for the card.

If you look closely, all 7 colors of the Rainbow are somewhere on the card...remember Roy G. Biv? 0:) The roses are for a portion of the lyrics from Wonderful World.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole passed away in 1997 but his beautiful music will live on. For Now, Happy Crafting!

365 Cards Day 7 Challenge

Ok, so I'm going out of order. :o) I have decided to challenge myself to get as many of this weeks 365 Card challenges done as I can. Let me tell you, I had to think on Day 7. The challenge was to make a "fierce" card. I don't have any animal print paper nor do I have any serious animal stamps.....hum....I decided to make a "fierce" sorta nasty birthday card. hehehe

A Paper Pieced Baby Card

Another challenge card for 365 Cards! :o) Day 10's challenge was called "Trendy." Participants were asked to look at current paper crafting trends in recent magazine or the Internet and use what we see as the inspiration for a card.

One of the things I've been noticing recently is Paper Piecing. In a recent edition of Card Maker magazine the entire process was highlighted. It was from that article (and a sketch I found elsewhere in publication) that I made this card.

Paper Piecing is an off shoot of quilting. An image is "colored" using different papers. For this project, I stamped the teddy bear on a piece of patterned paper. I then re-stamped it on coordinating brown paper for his nose. The image was stamped two more times on pattern blue paper (flower petals) and yellow (center of flower.) Each element was cut out and attached to the original image. You can also paper piece using an electronic cutter such as a Cricut (using the layers tab) or even a manual cutter such as a Cuttlebug or Sizzix.

You know I love to "color," but I really like the options that Paper Piecing provides. The ability to use multiple pattern papers on a single image opens up so many possibilities for your projects. What do you think? For Now, Happy Crafting!

An Arch Shaped Easter Card

The gals at 365 Cards proposed an interesting challenge on Day 8. We are to make an "Arch" card. Hummm...after stumbling around on the Internet, I came up with this idea.

With the design and Easter, I initially thought of a respectful "stained glass" look, but unfortunately I didn't have the right stamps. So I decided to go in a totally different direction and make a fun card.

This card has an odd slant to it especially if you are familiar with Close To My Heart Paper Packets. The purple (Gypsy) pattern paper is from a set called Hooligans. The papers actually are slanted toward Halloween! What I wanted to show is that when designing a card or scrapbook page, take a close look at your papers. Just because a pattern is slanted toward one theme, doesn't mean that you can't use it for a totally different Holiday or theme. Take a close look at your stash, you might be surprised at what you find. :o)

A few other details about this card, it is done on an A2 arched base. The colors include Gypsy (purple), Creme Burlee, White Daisy and Hollyhock. The cute little bunny is from a set called "Bunny Love." He was colored using the inks from the stamp pads and a blending pen. I punched the multiple flowers out to repeat the flowers from his bouquet and colored the centers with a glitter pen.

365 Cards Challenge An Image Using Water Color Pencils

I recently stumbled in the 365 Cards Blog. Daily, the gals there put up a new and different challenge...what a job that is! :o) Challenge Day 6 was to make a card using this sketch...

I looked at the sketch and immediately thought gift card holder, alas, the more I played, the less of a gift card holder I came up with. I shall make one using this sketch at some point, but for now, this is the card I made.

Normally, I would have heat embossed the image before I water colored. Last night, I had a conversation with a good friend and very experienced artist, who suggested that for fine detail images and water coloring it is best to stamp the image in a lighter color rather than heat embossing. He asserted that the EP could "muddy" the fine details. I was anxious to try his suggestion so I pulled out one of my all time favorite Close To My Heart stamps called "Enjoy Every Moment." It is featured in the current Idea Book. I stamped the image in Desert Sand ink and then proceeded to water color. It did work well. The medium colored Desert Sand allows the details of the flowers and leaves to show through the water coloring without the worry of it cracking. I was thrilled! The Close To My Heart inks also did not bleed when touched with water...even better! :o)

The pattern paper is from a Paper Packet called Miracles (another all time favorite of mine) and the card stock is Colonial White, Sweet Leaf and Crystal Blue. I've been making these fun stick pins with jewelry head pins and seed pearls. I thought the bow needed just a touch of something extra to finish off the card. What do you think?

I really did enjoy the City Crafter Challenge Blog this week. The challenge was to create using Blues, Greens, Pinks and Creams. Perfect for Spring and so matches my favorite colors.

I wanted to do another scrapbook page...this one suitable for perhaps a Wedding Invitation. I have a fancy Wedding to attend in April and want to give the couple a framed Invitation as a part of their gift. Must practice and figure out what looks best. My eye tells me that if a page is used for an invitation, it should be highlighted by the embellishments, not overwhelmed by them. What do you think?

Masculine Birthday Card

So often people ask about masculine Birthday Cards. Let's face it, so many papers and stamps out there scream "girly." Well, I thought it was high time to make a masculine card!

I just love this stamp set that is new in the recently released CTMH Idea Book. It is called "Summer Breeze" and it includes this light house image, a sailboat, the water, and 2 lovely sentiments. The images are so terrific that they can stand alone or be colored. The background paper used on this card is also new. It is called "Lucky." This is the first time that I have used it. It is great set for travel or like this, masculine cards.

This card is done on a 5 x 7 inch base of Colonial White. I added the first mat of Pacificia and then the mat of Lucky. The small band is Desert Sand. The image was stamped in Desert Sand and then colored with a blending pen and Bamboo, Desert Sand, Sky, Pacificia and Lagoon. The finishing touch is the hemp. Perfect for a seafaring card. What do you think?

Masculine cards are not the easiest. You have to keep reminding yourself not to reach for lace, buttons and bows. :o) For Now, Happy Crafting!
